A successful cultural event in Redditch has been described as the perfect way to end Refugee Week.
Around 75 people enjoyed food, dance and friendship at the “Taste of Home” event at Redditch Library.
“It was beyond my expectations,” said Sue Yeng, one of the organisers from Bromsgrove & Redditch Welcome Refugees (BRWR).
“I'm so pleased that everybody came out and supported us. We feel united as a community with the refugees who’re living in Bromsgrove and Redditch.
“It was a good way to celebrate Refugee Week - the perfect ending - and to spread the word that this is life for refugees, and we need to help them.”
Food from Ukraine, Syria and Afghanistan was brought by refugees who mingled with volunteers and members of the public.
Traditional Ukrainian folk routines were performed by refugee dancers from across the region.
There were also dance performances from a troupe set up by Redditch Ukrainian refugee Yana Tishyna, one of many who’ve benefitted from the support of BRWR.
She explained that folk music is extremely popular in Ukraine, which is why she established a group called “Mriya” which translates as ‘dream’. Borscht was also laid on by fellow refugees.
“We like and love and don’t want forgot our culture,” Yana explained, “so we just share our culture to show how it’s beautiful, rich and tasty!”
And she said the “Taste of Home” event was a perfect example of how refugees can integrate into British communities.
“I think that all people must live together in peace and be polite to each other,” she added. “It’s really important especially in our time – so many wars, so many dangers – so we need to help each other and share our cultures and share our kindness.”
