Refugee Week (17th – 23rd June)

Next week is Refugee Week (17th – 23rd June), the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking asylum.

Refugees in Bromsgrove have thanked the town for the level of welcome and support they continue to receive as they try to build new lives in the community.

Bromsgrove & Redditch Welcome Refugees (BRWR) is marking Refugee Week with a Market Stall on Bromsgrove High Street on Saturday 22nd, as part of the Court Leet celebrations. Everyone is welcome to come along, chat and eat. Then on Saturday 29th, we have a “Taste of Home” event at Redditch Library.

Our group supports about 200 refugees across the two towns, as well as some asylum seekers.

BRWR Chair, Yvonne Rendell, said Refugee Week was a time when those seeking sanctuary wanted to say thank you. “Every single one of the people we help, and who have become our friends, is very grateful for the way they’ve been treated in this town,” she said.
“These are people who’ve fled from often unimaginable horrors; and the compassion and understanding they’ve received from the people of Bromsgrove has helped them come to terms with their experiences.”
